General FAQs
- Where can I purchase Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Litter?
- Please view our where to buy page to find out where you can buy Ever Clean® products.
- Is it okay to flush the clumps of Ever Clean® litter down the toilet?
- No. We do not recommend flushing any type of clay cat litter, because it can cause clogging.
- What's the best way to dispose of Ever Clean® Litter?
- Simply remove clumps and solid waste daily and dispose in the trash. DO NOT FLUSH down the toilet. Once a month, empty the entire litter box and dispose in the trash.
- Is it okay to use Ever Clean® Litter for other pets, such as hamsters, rabbits or ferrets?
- We only recommend using this product for cats.
- I've heard that cat litter provides good traction on snow and ice. Is this true?
- We don't recommend using clumping cat litter as traction aid on snow-covered ground. All clumping litters are slippery when wet, and very difficult to remove once placed on a wet cement driveway or patio. These products are only intended for use as cat litters.
- Is it okay to mix Ever Clean® Litter with other litters?
- No. We do not recommend mixing Ever Clean® litter with other litters because it may not clump as well as expected.
- Is Ever Clean® Litter harmful to cats or other animals if ingested?
- Ever Clean® litter is not known to cause harm to animals, including kittens, when ingested in small quantities. However, if a pet eats a large amount of any litter (i.e. a bowlful), we recommend that you contact your vet.
- I've heard that ingesting cat litter, especially the scoopable kind, can harm kittens. What's your position on this?
- The Clorox Company is a member of the Sorptive Minerals Institute (SMI), a national trade association that represents the producers and marketers of absorbent clay products, specifically cat litter. The member companies represent approximately 95% of clay cat litter products sold in the United States. When SMI began hearing "rumors" about clumping litter, they interviewed veterinarians, pet storeowners and cat owners, asking if they were aware of any health related problems that could be directly attributed to the use of clumping litter. SMI contracted with the National Animal Poison Control Center at the University of Illinois asking them to provide names and comments of any individuals that called regarding health problems that they associated with clumping litter. Whenever possible, these pet owners and their veterinarians were contacted. Autopsies were performed on animals purported to have died as a result of using clumping litter. In every case the autopsy revealed there was some other underlying cause of death, totally unrelated to clumping litter.
SMI even spoke to the holistic veterinary practitioner who first raised this litter issue and she was not able to provide a single piece of evidence linking clumping litter with sickness or death. Even the ASPCA has no health issue with clumping cat litter and they continue to recommend it.
Despite numerous consultations, interviews and tests, neither Clorox, SMI nor any of the veterinarians with whom we have spoken, have been able to find any scientific evidence linking the use of clumping litter with the sickness or death of any kitten or cat.

Ever Clean® Litter formula and CARBON Plus™ FAQs
- Is carbon safe for cats?
- Yes, our litters with activated carbon are safe for use by cats.
- Does your cat litter biodegrade?
- Our product is primarily composed of clay. Because clay itself does not break down, cat litter does not biodegrade.
- What are the ingredients of Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Cat litter?
- The litter contains bentonite clay, activated carbon/charcoal and borates. Some products contain fragrance, zeolite crystals and/or cedar.
- How is CARBON Plus™ added to New Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Cat litter? The new litter doesn't look different?
- The CARBON Plus™ has been added through a manufacturing process called "agglomeration", which puts the carbon INSIDE the litter granule. New Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Cat litter is as clean and safe for your cat and home as the previous formula. In the Ever Clean® EverFresh® litter product, extra carbon is added directly to the litter.
- Do other brands of clumping cat litter contain carbon/Carbon Plus™?
- The Clorox Company, the maker of Ever Clean® cat litter products, uses a patented combination of clumping clay and carbon. Only clumping litter manufactured by Clorox contains carbon.
- What does Carbon Plus™ do? How does it work?
- The carbon in Ever Clean® litter is specifically activated carbon. When carbon is heated with steam or carbon dioxide at ~1000°C in the absence of oxygen, it becomes activated carbon. The activation process gives the carbon a unique combination of a porous internal microstructure and an extremely large surface area, making it an outstanding material for odor absorption.
The carbon acts like a magnet for organic-based odors (like cat odor) by grabbing the odors and holding them to the vast surface area of the carbon. This means organic-based odors get absorbed. Also, just 5 grams of activated carbon has the surface area of a football field. That means 100 yards by 50 yards of surface area available for odor absorption. In addition, an antimicrobial agent is added to the litter to inhibit the growth of odor-causing bacteria.

- How is Activated Charcoal different than Activated Carbon/CARBON Plus™?
- Activated Charcoal and Activated Carbon are two names for the same thing. Because the original EverFresh® litter brand used the term "Activated Charcoal" we have continued to use that term with that Ever Clean® EverFresh® litter variety. The rest of the Ever Clean® litter products use the term "Activated Carbon."
- Is there baking soda in Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Cat Litter?
- No. We do not use baking soda as an ingredient.
Ever Clean® Premium Cat Litter Products FAQs
- What's the difference among the various formulas of Ever Clean® Litter?
- There are 7 varieties of Ever Clean® litter: All Ever Clean® litter varieties include "CARBON Plus™" so you can be assured of maximum odor control no matter which variety you choose.
In the seven varieties of Ever Clean® litter, the common and primary ingredient is clay. Ever Clean® Premium Clumping Cat Litter is made from natural minerals and clays, and it is 99.9% dust-free.
In addition, Ever Clean® litter bonds Activated Carbon to the clay granules. When carbon is heated with steam or carbon dioxide at ~1000°C in the absence of oxygen, it becomes activated carbon. The activation process gives the carbon a porous interior and an extremely large surface area—a unique combination that makes it an outstanding material for absorbing odors. Also, an antimicrobial agent has been added to Ever Clean® litter that is effective in fighting the growth of odor-causing bacteria in the litter. The agent is odorless, so your cat won't notice it's there.
Varieties and differences between them:
Ever Clean® Extra Strength Litter: Features maximum clumping power with a fresh, clean scent that is released on contact with moisture, so it works when it's needed.
Ever Clean® Extra Strength Unscented Litter: Our most popular formula. Features maximum clumping power in a fragrance-free formula for cats (and people) sensitive to scent.
Ever Clean® Multiple Cat Litter: More odor fighting antimicrobial agents than our Extra Strength formula for households with multiple cats.
Ever Clean® EverFresh® with Activated Charcoal Litter: Activated Charcoal is both bonded to the litter and mixed among the litter granules to help keep your home smelling clean and fresh.
Ever Clean® Cedar Litter: Contains real eastern red cedar. Cedar is a natural deodorizer and freshener that is traditionally used in furniture, such as cedar chests.
Ever Clean® Multi-Crystals Blends Litter: Combines the maximum clumping strength of Ever Clean® litter plus the multi-strength power of crystals to control odors and absorb liquids on contact.
Ever Clean® Fresh Lavender Litter: Maximum clumping power in a fresh lavender scent that is released on contact with moisture, so it works when needed.

- Is EverFresh® Low Track Litter still available?
- No, this product has been discontinued and replaced by Ever Clean® EverFresh® with Activated Charcoal litter. This fragrance free premium litter offers the same odor-neutralizing activated charcoal and antimicrobial agent to help keep your home smelling clean and fresh.
